Terms & Conditions

Last updated: April 14, 2026

These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the Ancestree web application operated by Ancestree ("we", "us", or "our"). By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these Terms.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Ancestree. By using the service, you represent that you meet this age requirement and have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms.

2. Account Registration

You may register using an email address and password, or through a supported third-party authentication provider (such as Google). You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your credentials and for all activity under your account.

You agree to provide accurate, current information during registration and to update it as needed. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that contain false or misleading information.

3. Your Content

"Your Content" means all data you enter into Ancestree, including names, dates, biographical text, photos, contact information, addresses, and relationship data.

  • Ownership. You retain full ownership of Your Content. We do not claim any intellectual property rights over the family tree data you create.
  • License to us. By using the service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, and display Your Content solely for the purpose of providing the Ancestree service to you and your invited collaborators.
  • Responsibility. You are solely responsible for the accuracy and legality of Your Content. You must have the right to share any personal information you enter about other individuals. We recommend obtaining consent from living family members before adding their personal details.

4. Sharing and Collaboration

Ancestree allows you to share trees with others via invite links and role-based permissions (owner, editor, viewer). When you share a tree:

  • Owners have full control, including the ability to invite or remove members and delete the tree
  • Editors can add, modify, and archive people and relationships
  • Viewers can view the tree but cannot modify it

You are responsible for managing who has access to your trees. We are not liable for actions taken by collaborators you have invited.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose
  • Upload content that is defamatory, harassing, or violates the privacy rights of others
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other users' trees or accounts
  • Interfere with or disrupt the service or its infrastructure
  • Use automated tools to scrape, crawl, or extract data from the service
  • Upload malicious files, viruses, or harmful code

6. Intellectual Property

The Ancestree name, logo, design, and underlying software are owned by us and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. These Terms do not grant you any right to use our branding or trademarks.

7. Data and Privacy

Your use of Ancestree is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, and protect your information. All changes to your trees are recorded in an audit log for transparency and accountability.

8. Service Availability

We strive to keep Ancestree available at all times but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may temporarily suspend the service for maintenance, updates, or circumstances beyond our control. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you of planned downtime.

9. Termination

You may stop using Ancestree at any time. You may request account deletion by contacting us at hello@ancestree.app.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms or engage in conduct that is harmful to other users or the service. Where possible, we will provide notice before taking such action.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ancestree is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including loss of data. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you have paid us (if any) in the twelve months preceding the claim.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the service, your violation of these Terms, or your infringement of any third-party rights (including the privacy rights of individuals whose data you enter).

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by posting the updated Terms on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.

13. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law, without regard to conflict of law principles.
